The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) has appointed Careline Services, in partnership with the Business and Enterprise Group, to provide its new Business Link helpline
The first challenge we set ourselves was to conquer the giant that is Mount Everest while still balancing a full week of work.
Height from sea level to the highest peak 8,848m (29,029ft)
Average step - 7 inches.
Total steps to climb the equivalent height
49,764 steps (from sea level)
26,364 steps (from base camp/ actual mountain height)
We will attempt to demonstrate that there is always means to lead healthy lifestyle if you think outside the box. Where there is a will there is always a way!! Using pedometres to measure our progress, the three members of the BeingBetter team, Andy, Karen and Nicola will attempt this challenge in a week.
Undeterred by the climb from base camp the BeingBetter team decided to increase the challenge by making the climb from sea level almost doubling the total steps required. We then decided that 49,764 steps just didnt stretch far enough for the first leg of our 2011 team challenges so the BeingBetter team again decided to raise the bar and not only attempt to climb up the mountain during the working week but to travel back down the other side!
The total number of steps necessary for challenge number one (climbing up and down Mount Everest in a week) is 99,528 Gulp!
So how did we do?
On the first day of the challenge the team clocked a respectable but not world changing 27, 332 steps. After a boost in effort we improved day by day to a team best of 50, 717 steps on Thursday! By the close of the week we had achieved a fantastic total of 202, 334 steps against a target of 99, 528 meaning that we not only strode up and down the equivalent height of the slopes of Mount Everest once but twice, achieving 203% in our first team challenge.
Ok, so we didnt really climb a mountain but with a simple idea and bit of effort we incorporated a significant amount of activity into our working week and had fun doing it. Having a goal helps motivate effort and maintain focus and after a highly successful first task we as a team are raring to go with challenge number 2!
Mount Everest Challenge
Target - 99, 528 steps
Achieved - 202,334 steps (203%)
